Late March found us heading to the Texas Gulf Coast with cameras ready and expectations high. Our first stop was Smith Oaks Rookery, one of the premier birding destinations along the coast during nesting season.
Although we arrived a little early for chicks, the rookery was anything but quiet. The nesting season was well underway, and the trees were filled with birds busy preparing for the next stage of the breeding cycle. Everywhere we looked, adults were tending nests, gathering nesting material, and defending their chosen territories.
The boardwalk offered incredible views into the heart of the colony. Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Roseate Spoonbills, and other wading birds could be seen moving between nests while their brilliant breeding plumage added splashes of color throughout the rookery. There was a sense that the season was on the verge of exploding with activity. The nests were occupied, the birds were busy, and it wouldn't be long before the first chicks would begin appearing.
One of the highlights of our morning was photographing a beautiful Great Egret. Against a dark background, its white feathers seemed to glow. The elegant curve of its neck and the delicate breeding plumes created a striking portrait that captured the grace these birds are known for.
After spending time at Smith Oaks, we made our way back toward the Gulf Coast shoreline. There, a completely different show awaited us.
The Brown Pelicans were taking full advantage of the coastal winds. These magnificent birds cruised effortlessly above the water, often passing close enough to reveal every detail of their feathers. Their ability to soar with barely a wingbeat is always impressive to watch.
One pelican approached nearly head-on, wings stretched wide as it rode the wind toward shore. The perspective highlighted the incredible wingspan and power of this iconic Gulf Coast bird. Another passed by in beautiful side profile, perfectly lit against the blue water, creating one of our favorite images from the trip.
The contrast between the peaceful nesting colonies at Smith Oaks and the dynamic flight displays along the Gulf made for a memorable day of photography. While we may have been a little early for the chicks, we were treated to a fascinating glimpse into the beginning of the nesting season and some outstanding opportunities to photograph birds in their natural habitat.
Spring on the Gulf Coast never disappoints, and this visit was a reminder that every stage of the season has its own story to tell. Sometimes the anticipation of what's coming is just as rewarding as the main event itself.
